What Are The Four Types Of Neck Pain?

Understanding What Your Neck Is Telling You

Neck pain doesn’t always feel the same. For one person, it might be a dull ache that builds throughout the workday. For someone else, pain might appear with certain movements or make it difficult to comfortably turn their head. Understanding how your neck pain shows up is an important first step toward understanding what your body needs.

At Case Physical Therapy, we look beyond where it hurts to understand how your body moves and what may be contributing to the problem. Neck pain often involves more than one factor, which is why treatment should start with you rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain sometimes follows an injury or sudden movement, but it can also develop gradually from everyday habits and repeated movements.

The source of the pain may involve the muscles, joints or nerves in and around the neck. Understanding how your symptoms show up can offer more insight into what might be causing them.

What Are The Four Types Of Neck Pain?

Neck pain doesn’t look or feel the same for everyone. Where you feel discomfort, when it shows up and how it affects your movement all provide useful information about what may be going on.

Identifying the type of neck pain you’re experiencing is a good place to start.

1. Muscular Neck Pain

Sometimes neck pain feels like soreness, tightness or fatigue in the muscles around your neck and shoulders. You might notice it after spending a long day at your computer or doing something that asks those muscles to work harder than usual.

Muscular neck pain doesn’t always come from one obvious event. Repetitive movements or spending long periods in the same position may gradually leave the area feeling uncomfortable.

The important question isn’t simply which muscle hurts. It’s why that area is being asked to work the way it is.

2. Neck Pain Related To Joint Movement

Your neck relies on multiple joints working together to help you turn your head and move comfortably. When that movement becomes limited, you might notice stiffness or pain when turning in a particular direction.

This may be especially noticeable while driving, exercising or doing other activities that require you to move your neck.

3. Neck Pain With Nerve-Related Symptoms

Neck pain sometimes occurs alongside symptoms that extend beyond the neck itself. You might notice discomfort that travels into your shoulder or arm rather than staying in one spot.

When a nerve in the neck becomes irritated or compressed, symptoms may follow the path of that nerve into other areas of the body. This might feel different from the soreness or stiffness associated with muscular neck pain and may include sensations such as tingling or numbness.

4. Neck Pain Related To Movement And Posture

If your neck feels fine when you start the day but becomes increasingly uncomfortable after hours at a desk, behind the wheel or looking down at a device, your daily movement habits deserve a closer look.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you have “bad posture.” Your body isn’t designed to remain perfectly still in one position all day. The way you move between positions and the demands you repeatedly place on your body matter, too.

Rather than trying to maintain one position all day, focus on changing positions and moving regularly throughout your day.

When Neck Pain Starts Affecting Your Day

It’s easy to ignore an occasional stiff neck, especially when it seems to improve once you get moving. Recurring pain is different.

You might start changing how you work or avoiding certain movements because you know they’ll be uncomfortable. Something as simple as checking your blind spot while driving or getting comfortable enough to sleep might suddenly require more thought than it used to.

When neck pain starts changing the way you go about your day, it’s worth understanding why.

How Physical Therapy Helps With Neck Pain

Neck pain physical therapy starts by looking at the person rather than treating every case of neck pain the same way.

At Case PT, we evaluate how your body moves and look for patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms. From there, treatment is built around what we find and what you need to get back to doing comfortably.

Your treatment might involve hands-on care alongside exercises designed specifically for you. As your movement changes, your treatment progresses with you rather than following a generic routine.

The goal is to understand what’s contributing to your neck pain so treatment focuses on helping you move more comfortably.

Take A Closer Look At Your Neck Pain

You don’t have to wait until neck pain takes over your routine to understand what’s going on.

At Case Physical Therapy, you’ll receive personalized care focused on how your body moves and what matters to you. We’ll take the time to understand your symptoms and develop a treatment plan designed around your needs.

Schedule an appointment with Case PT and start working toward a more comfortable way of moving.
